Head of research group
Prof. Dr. ir. Dick Botteldooren
Dick Botteldooren is a research professor at Ghent University. He teaches courses on Acoustics, Noise pollution, and computational methods.
Current research interests include environmental noise, numerical modelling, and applied acoustics. Research on environmental noise includes outdoor sound propagation in urban and rural area, noise mapping, and modelling noise effects including soundscape and quiet areas. Numerical modelling research has mainly focussed on time domain methods and their use in outdoor atmosphere.
Other professional activities: Editor-in-Chief of Acta Acustica united with Acustica, Vice-President of the Belgian Acoustical Society, Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, member of European Acoustical Association, member of IEEE.
Part time professor
Prof. Dr. ir. Timothy Van Renterghem
Timothy Van Renterghem is a part-time professor at Ghent University and post-doctoral researcher at IBBT (Interdisciplinair Instituut voor Breedband Technologie). He teaches courses with relation to environmental noise.
Research interests are linked to sound propagation in the outdoor environment, including both (detailled) numerical modelling and noise abatement strategies. Of special interest are the influence of meteorlogical effects on sound propagation and noise barriers, urban sound propagation, and the use of natural means (like trees and green roofs) to solve noise problems. More information on these research topics can be found by following this link. Member of the Belgian Acoustical Society, European Acoustical Association and the Acoustical Society of America.
Post-doc
Bert De Coensel received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in engineering physics from Ghent University in 2002 and 2007 respectively. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen) and an adjunct lecturer at the Griffith School of Environment, Brisbane. He has been a visiting scholar at Stockholm University in 2004, at UC Berkeley from October 2008 to September 2009 as a fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF), and at Griffith University in 2010.
His research is mainly directed towards techniques for altering the urban soundscape in order to increase the quality of life of its inhabitants and visitors. Particular fields of interest are urban acoustic design and the effects of intelligent traffic management on the urban soundscape, computational models of human perception of environmental sound, auditory masking and attention focusing, and computational auditory scene analysis.
He is a member of the Belgian Acoustical Society, the Acoustical Society of America and IEEE. He is expert member of ISO working group TC43/SC1/WG54 on perceptual assessment of soundscape quality.
Annelies Bockstael is a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen).
