QSIDE
QSIDE is a recently started European LIFE+ project, aimed at investigating the positive effects of quiet façades and quiet urban areas on traffic noise annoyance and sleep disturbance. In particular, the project aims to show how European cities can effectively reduce the harmful effects of traffic noise by offering people noise refuges. The acoustics group of INTEC is mainly involved in this project through the development of advanced techniques for estimating traffic noise levels at quiet sides of urban dwellings and in urban courtyards. Furthermore, guidelines will be developed to indicate how quiet façades and areas can be created as part of urban environmental policy, e.g. by modifying traffic flows or by choosing specific orientations of residential buildings with respect to roads.
